The Price of Success: Bullying, Controversy, and the Urgent Need to Restore Empathy

Featured in our latest issue Explore the Full Magazine

In an era of constant exposure, success has become a sentence rather than a celebration. To stand out, to win, or to fulfill a dream today often means facing relentless public judgment that too easily forgets one essential truth: behind every achievement, there is a human being.

The cases of Fátima Bosch, Miss Universe 2025, and Ángela Aguilar clearly illustrate how bullying has moved beyond private spaces and taken root in the media and digital arenas.

Fátima Bosch won her title because she set her mind to it, worked for it, and met the demands of a highly competitive contest. Her victory came during an edition marked by controversy, questioned decisions, and events that sparked public debate.

However, no controversy can justify the hostile, dismissive, and dehumanizing treatment she has received. Her dream was to win and represent her country, and that deserves respect, not punishment.

Similarly, Ángela Aguilar has been subjected to constant criticism that has crossed the line from artistic analysis into personal attacks. Public judgment of her life, her career, and her personal choices reflects a dangerous trend: the normalization of mistreatment when a public figure does not conform to others’ expectations.

It is deeply troubling how easily today’s world dehumanizes. Opinions are voiced, fingers are pointed, and sentences are passed without considering the emotional impact on those on the receiving end.

We live in a society that consumes illusions, fantasies, and spectacles, yet ignores the real feelings of the people behind a crown, a stage, or a microphone.

It is not acceptable to demean someone’s work and effort simply because we disagree with an outcome or a media narrative. Criticism is valid when it is constructive; bullying never is.

No human being deserves to be mistreated, humiliated, or turned into a target of collective ridicule. Now more than ever, we must be more empathetic. We must remember that we are only passing through this world, that fame is fleeting, and that true legacy is not measured in titles or applause, but in love, respect, and humanity.

Living fully in the present also means being mindful of how we treat others and of the mark we leave with our words. May we, as a society, reflect and reclaim the values that seem to be fading with time.

In a world where love for one another is weakening, defending human dignity is not a choice — it is a shared responsibility.
